Teaching

My teaching style is shaped by the mentors and non-traditional paths that defined my own education. I prioritize real-world examples and making abstract concepts tangible. Rather than only lecturing on equilibrium prices or the efficient market hypothesis, I have students experience these firsthand through experimental games like double auctions where we simulate a market environment and trade fictitious goods. In my experience, and from my students' feedback, these hands-on activities complement the theoretical material that forms much of economics and finance coursework and help students retain and apply what they learn.

Student Feedback

"Joe's approach to his teachings were to give us students real intuition and a broad understanding of the key topics areas that are most valuable to our future success in finance. It's obvious that Joe is extremely passionate about the material that he teaches which made it easier to stay engaged….The exams in the class are challenging, and require the students to understand the concepts, however, they are set up to give the students many opportunities for success through written responses and partial credit."

“I found the focus on the concepts behind Finance to be extremely helpful rather than just focusing on numbers and formulas. Having written answers and graphing questions on the tests was something I did not expect but gladly welcomed. Overall, this course was much more informative than I was expecting it to be.”
